Results from the WIAA Boys State Tennis Tournament Madison, WI, THURSDAY, June 4, 2009:
Menomonie Boys Tennis Team members Gui Silva, Sam Lindsay and Johan Mellenius traveled to the WIAA State Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison yesterday.
Silva was defeated in straight sets 6-1, 6-2, by Stratton Gilmore, the #2 singles player from Madison East High School. Gilmore is ranked #5 in singles Tennis competition in the state of Wisconsin.
Lindsay and Mellenius were defeated in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, by Marquette University High School's doubles team of Mac Mulcahy and Jack Porritt. Marquette University's High School team is ranked #1 in Wisconsin with their #1 and #2 singles players seeded #1 and #2 in this week's draw at the WIAA State Tennis tournament.
Silva had placed third in the sectional competition last week to gain an automatic slot in the State tennis tournament, and the doubles team of Lindsay and Mellenius received Special Qualifier status at the state competition based on their excellent performance in the regular season.
Menomonie's Boys tennis coach Chick Lindsay described the matchplay in Madison 'as an outstanding opportunity for players to experience high level competition, and to reconnect with players they met during the regular season.'
