Creative Writing

Using descriptive writing as the basis for all subsequent writing, the student will explore a variety of forms including journal, personal experience, personal essay, short story, play,
and poetry.  Students may elect to repeat this course for additional credit.

Theater

Students learn the basics of acting, movement, staging, character development, and play production.  Performance and analysis are emphasized.

Basic English Skills

This course gives students the opportunity to sharpen up their reading, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.  They will learn a variety of strategies to help them become more effective readers in their other classes.
Literature & Film

Students in this course will learn to value both the written and film versions of literature for storytelling, entertainment, communicating history, and as reflectors of culture.  The
written and visual media will be studied and compared.  Students will learn to identify the strengths, weaknesses, possibilities and constraints of both.

Advanced Theater

PREREQUISITE:  Theater, or consent of instructor.  Students will study dramatic literature, theater history, acting, and technical theater in greater depth.  Performance
and critical analysis are stressed in this course, as well as individual directing and technical theater projects.

Advanced Speech

This course, designed for the student interested in furthering skills in oral communication, will expect that students create and present projects using public speaking and writing skills.  Emphases will be on public speaking, debate, and the arts of drama and oral interpretation.

Voices of the Holocaust

This course will give students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of Holocaustliterature, including works by Elie Wiesel, Anne Frank, and Primo Levi.  This course will also offer a variety of approaches to analyzing and responding to this literature, including discussion, expressive writing, critical analysis, and creative projects.

Science Fiction & Fantasy

This course will give students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of science fiction and fantasy literature, including works by Ray Bradbury, Piers Anthony, J.R.R. Tolkein, and
Ursula K. LeGuin.  This course will also offer a variety of approaches to analyzing and responding to this literature, including discussion, expressive writing, critical analysis, and
creative projects.

Independent Study

PREREQUISITE:  Consent of School Guidance Counselor, Department Chair, and an Administrator. Independent study is for the student who wishes to pursue the study of English beyond that provided by his/her classes.
With the aid of an instructor and the department chair, the student will design a course of study that will meet agreed
objectives.
